I am writing in support of the candidacy of Manley M. Collins for a position with the South Carolina

Department of Education.

I have known Mr. Collins for over 20 years. I was introduced to him when he was a 19 years old student

attending South Carolina State University (SCSU). At the time we met, he was in his pursuit of

undergraduate education via the United States Department of Agriculture 1890 National Scholars

Program. From the outset, I found Mr. Collins to be a tenacious, driven individual. Shortly after meeting

Mr. Collins, I discovered that his mother was facing health challenges. Despite the demands of being a

fulltime student, he worked both an on-campus job and one off campus. These jobs were necessary to

have the resources to contribute to the care of his mother and 2 younger brothers.

Mr. Collins successfully managed both his family and academic duties. During his time at SCSU, he was a

member of the school’s track team and served as Student Government Association President. He also

was able to successfully pledge a fraternity. His ability to manage these disparate activities speaks well

to his time management skills and academic acumen.

Subsequent to Mr. Collins’ completion of his undergraduate studies, he ventured into the corporate

world for several years. However, he continued to yearn for greater knowledge and, ultimately,

returned to graduate school and received graduate degrees in business, information systems

management. The road has not been without challenges. However, the fact that Mr. Collins persevered

speaks to his character.

I am confident that Mr. Collins will be a contributing member of any organization that is fortunate

enough to hire him and offer this recommendation without reservation.
